Low-identification Whites show a puzzling backlash AGAINST Trump under racial-shift framing.
Evidence
We only observed direct effects of condition among Whites low in ethnic identification for two outcomes. The racial shift (vs. control) condition led to less positivity towards Trump (B = −4.01, 95% CI [−7.85, −0.16]) and less opposition to political correctness (B = −0.21, 95% CI [−0.41, −0.03]) among weakly identified Whites. — Brenda Major and Alison Blodorn and Gregory Major Blascovich, The threat of increasing diversity, 56
Categorization
- QUESTION: Why would weakly identified Whites become less pro-Trump when primed with racial shift? Is the racial-shift frame repulsive to those not invested in White identity, a possible ceiling/reverse effect worth probing across identity axes?
