Anti-Muslim racism is produced across intersecting institutional spheres, not by any single source
Evidence
The conclusion brings together my arguments in the book through a map that I call the âmatrix of anti-Muslim racism,â which outlines how various spheresâthe foreign policy establishment, the security apparatus, think tanks, the academyâproduce Islamophobia. Like Policing the Crisis, this book takes a multifocal approach to understanding race and racism. In addition to the legal, police, and media domains discussed in Policing the Crisis, I study knowledge production, particularly knowledge that informs policy, and the practices of the national security state. Dominant constructions of racialized others are best understood, I argue, as the product of multiple intersecting spheres and the complex ideologies and practices that emerge from them. I discuss how the mainstream media, as well as right-wing and progressive media, are the staging grounds on which various forms of Islamophobiaâliberal, conservative, reactionaryâare articulated and contested. Significantly, both rightand left-wing social movements vie for hegemony within the imperial matrix. â Deepa Kumar, Islamophobia and the Politics of Empire, 90
