Northern white mission schools refused blacks administrative and faculty posts despite stated egalitarianism
Evidence
During the 1870s and 1880s tensions rose to fever pitch over hiring policy at the American Baptist Home Mission Society’s schools. The reluctance of the ABHMS to hire black faculty and administrators served as a continual insult to growing numbers of blacks. … Except for Howard University, the schools established by the various Protestant denominations employed only one or two African Americans on their faculties during the early 1880s. Even Congregationalist-founded Howard refused to promote John Mercer Langston from acting president to president after the death of Oliver O. Howard. Langston’s stellar reputation as an Oberlin praduate, dean of the Howard law school, and role as acting president did not convince the white founders, who refused to appoint Langston to the position despite the demand for him on the part of black trustees and the student body. — Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, Righteous Discontent, 252
