European Islamophobia targets Muslim citizenship rights while American Islamophobia fuels foreign wars
Evidence
There is a fundamental difference between the manifestations of anti-Muslim racism in Europe and in the United States—and this difference makes the market for the native informer’s services doubly profitable in the latter. While, in Europe, classical anti-Semitism is now being transfigured into assaults on the rights of Muslim citizens, in the United States such rights as wearing a scarf or attending a religious school have seldom been questioned. In Europe, Islamophobia is largely manifested in the antagonism of most European Union (EU) states toward Turkish membership, and in their condescending attitude toward indigenous Muslim communities in the former Yugoslavia and other Eastern European enclaves, and multiplied by the denial of full citizenship rights to new Muslim emigres in countries like Germany, France, and Austria. — Hamid Dabashi, Brown Skin, White Masks, 338
