White-run black colleges simultaneously assimilated and challenged racism and sexism
Evidence
The northern Baptists envisioned their colleges as assimilating apparatuses that would render the black elite “thoroughly homogeneous” with white middle-class culture. Herein lay the dialectic between the conservative and progressive implications of their educational philosophy. When they compared their southern schools to the University of Chicago or to Vassar and Wellesley, as they often did, they signaled a progressive challenge to both racism and sexism and thereby encouraged their male and female students to take pride in their intellectual capabilities. — Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, Righteous Discontent, 157
