Traditional African slavery was often time-limited and permitted full social integration

Evidence

In the typical intra-African slave practice, individual slaves were in that condition for specific purposes; often they were slaves for a specified period of time, not for life. Sometimes slaves could become adopted by the village with whom they were bonded or by specific families. Even if former slaves might be barred from the highest levels of status in a group, they could become full-fledged members of that group, marry, and enjoy all rights and obligations. — Rebecca A.
