Scholars conflate distinct religious-nationalist traditions under the blanket term Christian nationalism.

Evidence

Previous scholarship also analytically conflates a variety of symbolic and rhetorical sentiments from historically distinct movements, ideologies, and social institutions. Understanding this duality within CN is important because, as Besbris and Khan (2017:148) warn, “As the concept spreads, scholars become incapable of precisely stating what it is and it ends up depicting many things that are unrelated to or inconsistent with one another.” We feel this has occurred with the concept of CN and offer this paper to clarify that CS and RT comprise distinct dimensions. — Ruiqian Li and Paul Froese, The Duality of American Christian…, 218
