Outbidding and party modernization mutually reinforce each other rather than conflict

Evidence

The example of the DUP shows that the relationship between outbidding and modernization strategies to be both complex and partial. However, given the emphasis of modernization strategies on electoral success an immediate link can be made with the outbidding strategy of exploiting electoral contests. In some contexts, outbidding parties recognize that winning elections requires policy and operational shifts in order to secure electoral advantage. The use of modern technology, growing party professionalism, and a broadening of appeal are all obvious in this respect. Importantly, the outbidding strategy of exploiting elections facilitates the modernization strategies of greater professionalism, the use of technology, and the broadening of party appeal. In the case of the DUP, it is possible to argue that more active electoral participation by the party has actually stimulated modernization. — Cathy Gormley-Heenan and Roger Macginty, Ethnic Outbidding and Party…, 95
