Muslim scholars sanctioned Christian worship as allowable dissimulation

Evidence

A scholar (alim) of this kingdom22 when speaking of the sufferings [enc¸erramiento, which I would interpret as a calque on Arabic diq] we are undergoing, said: “I know very well that we are going through a period of terror, but Allah will still not fail to punish us if we neglect the service of his kingdom insofar as our legal obligations are concerned. As for hiding our true intentions, we can all make use of this as is our privilege. [We can worship through] the singing of the foreigners whereby the Christians seek salvation, for it all may be classed as allowable dissimulation, for what is good doctrine may not be forbidden by any law, however harsh. — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 862

Categorization

  • DEFINE: Harvey’s parenthetical gloss defines encarramiento as a calque on Arabic diq (constriction/distress) — a useful translation note.
  • XREF: Connects to the Young Man’s earlier discussions and to Morisco taqiyya doctrines — this alim’s Friday homily is a concrete case of the doctrine in practice.
