Liberal reports falsely frame Islamophobia as fringe religious intolerance, not mainstream racism

Evidence

Trump and his ilk belong to what religion specialist Nathan Lean has called the “Islamophobia industry.” The Center for American Progress (CAP) published a comprehensive report on this network of individuals and groups titled Fear, Inc.: The Roots of the Islamophobia Network in America in 2011.5 This well-researched report documents the connections between various right-wing groups, political figures, think tanks, conservative foundations, and the mainstream and right-wing media. However, the thrust of the argument is that Islamophobia, which they understand as religious intolerance rather than as anti-Muslim racism, is propagated by a “small, tightly networked group” that exists outside the mainstream. In a follow-up publication in 2015, titled Fear, Inc. 2.0, the authors doubled down on their argument that Islamophobia is “not indicative of mainstream American views” and that only a small “fringe” that seeks to influence the mainstream is responsible for this ideology. This chapter sets out to disprove this claim. — Deepa Kumar, Islamophobia and the Politics of Empire, 651

  • XREF: Connects to the reader’s gap: this is a concrete case of a representation-level fix (relabeling Islamophobia as fringe intolerance) failing to grasp structure — the author is building the argument that such framing itself serves empire. — connects to: Liberal defenses of Muslims framed Islamophobia as intolerance, not empire-linked racism; The report’s racial-religious conflation undermines Islamophobia’s distinctiveness as a category — Chris Allen, Islamophobia, 384; Anti-Islamophobia measures failed to define the term and conflated distinct discourses — Chris Allen, Islamophobia, 100 (+5 more)
  • SEED: Possible companion piece: why structural critiques get contained when institutions like CAP frame racism as a ‘fringe’ — a case study for the MOC’s ‘fairer state’ failure mode.
  • QUESTION: Worth chasing: what would disproving the fringe framing concretely consist of — an empirical demonstration that the ‘fringe’ is wired into the establishment?
