Fieldwork on trading floors reveals the microstructural and knowledge-embedded basis of global trading systems.

Evidence

Given the lack of sociological research on global institutional interbank trading, field research provided the empirical basis for the description of the form of the respective social actions involved. It also revealed the microstructural basis of the global social system of trading, its knowledge embeddedness, and the meaning of globalism. Our presence and participation in the field yielded richer materials and permitted a more refined analysis than would have been possible by use of standardized interview tools; however, the number and location of trading floors investigated may diminish generalizability. — Karin Knorr Cetina & Urs Bruegger, Global Microstructures, 46
