White supremacists adopt camouflage symbols to pass in mainstream workplaces
Evidence
Leila and Sommer were both cognizant that they were privileged to avoid surveillance at airports because they were not identified as Muslim. This juxtaposition of Muslim women who wear the hijab versus those who do not is evidence that it is bodies that are identifiable as Muslim that are subjected to consistent and repetitive profiling. The comparison also reveals how racial privileges associated with skin tone—that is, passing for white—become muted if someone chooses to wear the hijab. The hijab marks women as foreigners who need discipline, demonstrating that clothing can work in the same way that skin tone marks someone as dangerous or a criminal. — Saher Selod, Forever Suspect_ Racialized…, 151 (

This is best exemplified in the cases of Indian men who were attacked after 9/11 because they were mistaken for Muslims or Arabs. The misidentification of Sikhs is another example of this, which both Erik Love (2017) and David Tyrer (2013) note in their books. Because Sikhs wear the turban, they are often misrecognized as Muslim. While I do not mean to downplay their experiences, in the time period I examined, Muslim men were not targeted by strangers in the same way that women who wear the hijab were. Strangers did not consistently harass them in public because of their skin tone. — , Selod, Saher - Forever Suspect_…, 735 (
