Turkish scholars studied ancient but neglected modern Turks abroad as émigrés.
Evidence
After the history of Turkey in all its eras, the two chief subjects are Turkish history and Islamic history. The first includes the history of the Turks outside Turkey. A fair amount of research has been carried out on the ancient Turkish peoples of Central Asia, the understanding of whose history and languages is of great importance even for the history of Turkey. Surprisingly little on the other hand is published about the other Turkish peoples in more recent times—in Central Asia, Turkestan, Azerbayjan and Russia—and most of that is the work of e´migre´s from those countries. — Bernard Lewis, From Babel to Dragomans, 2032

- QUESTION: Why did Turkish scholarship invest in ancient Central Asian Turks but ignore contemporary ones? Nationalist identity-building prefers glorious ancestors over embarrassing living kin.
