The Sacromonte forgeries were likely a Morisco subterfuge at inception

Evidence

The subterfuge was certainly not the creation of the central agencies of the Church such as the Holy Office, for as soon as Rome heard of what was going on, it took cautious steps to halt the advance of the heresy. That is clear from the reports of the papal nuncio. (Although he proceeded with deliberation, he was not deceived.) Few Christians would have had necessary expert knowledge of Islamic susceptibilities to fabricate the Sacromonte forgeries. On balance, it seems more likely that this was, at its inception, in some sense a Morisco enterprise, the enterprise of a minority, a Morisco minority. — L. P.
