The Sacromonte forgeries were a subterfuge of ambiguous religious authorship

Evidence

It is far more likely, of course, that the two originally conflicting religious groups would have continued locked into endless internecine doctrinal disputations. There are, after all, plenty of other cases in the world of insoluble deadlock maintained against all the dictates of common sense. Our central problem as we seek to understand the Sacromonte affair is this: was this as originally conceived a subterfuge thought up by Christians who were anxious to present their message in a guise acceptable to Muslims; or was it quite the opposite: a subterfuge thought up by Muslims seeking to penetrate Christianity and change it from within? Who was the duper and who the duped? — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 1326
