Forgeries require checking multiple transcripts because the originals stayed locked in Rome.
Evidence
Yet the multiple textual problems posed by these forgeries mean that those striving to interpret them constantly need to check and investigate the readings provided by the various transcripts. The “books” were preserved in the archives of the Holy Office in Rome, although there are indications that now, after nearly four hundred years, they may be accessible, in which case advances in their study are to be expected, although not overnight. For present purposes, material already accessible in libraries, especially on the Harleian manuscripts in the British Library, has had to suffice. — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 1758
