Teacher expectations lift achievement only if relationships stay non-antagonistic.

Evidence

Desegregation supporters also claim that teachers in white schools expect more out of black students and that they will benefit from this belief of their potential for achievement. However, this had not yet been proved. Black students in desegregated schools are also said to feel that they have a chance to make it in larger society and this may make him work harder and learn more. Once again this depends on the relationship with the white teachers and students who, if found to be antagonizing, could have the opposite effect. — Marcy Crouch, Magnet Schools and Other Means of…, 32
