Self-declared capitalists score second only to religious people in authoritarianism

Evidence

Not many people in these samples said “capitalism” described their basic outlook in life, but they did catch your eye. They stood out among the students and parents on the high end of the RWA distribution (135.3 and 156.9, respectively), second only to the religious in both cases. The capitalist parents also scored highest overall on my three measures of authoritarian aggression: Ethnocentrism (first place), ATH (second place), and Posse-Radicals (second place). — Bob Altemeyer, The Authoritarian Specter, 2783

Categorization

  • XREF: Corroborates and extends vault claims about free-market ideology and authoritarianism (Cooper’s link between neoliberal economics and reactionary politics); capitalism as life-outlook predicts high RWA and authoritarian aggression independent of religion.
  • QUESTION: Worth chasing whether this capitalist-authoritarianism link replicates with better-designed measures, since self-labeling groups here are small.
