Scale validity improves when instruments are built from lived experience plus expert review
Evidence
A variety of methodological tools were used to inform the instrument items, including in-depth qualitative interviews with Muslim Americans of all ethnic backgrounds about their experiences with anti-Muslim discrimination, expert reviews to ensure the content validity of the instruments, and cognitive interviews to determine whether potential participants understand items. This comprehensive process contributed to the design and validation of instruments grounded in the lived experiences of Muslim Americans, and informed by feedback from anti-Muslim discrimination researchers and the intended population for the scales, and through a review of the peer-reviewed and grey literature on anti-Muslim discrimination in the United States. — Naheed Ahmed, Measurement of Perceived Interpersonal…, 111
