Religious claims serve different functions depending on political position
Evidence
In terms of function, for Zionism, the main concern was legitimacy for its claim of Jewish “ownership” of the land; while for Palestinians, the main issue was mobilizing resistance. In terms of centrality, Hroub argues that Zionism has employed religious claims as a primary force of mobilization, at least in terms of the national claim to Palestine. The Palestinian national movement, by contrast, invoked religion only secondarily. This secondary role remains marginal until now, except of course in Hamas, which Hroub discusses at length. — Nadim N. Rouhana and Nadera Shalhoub-Kevorkian, When Politics Are Sacralized, 207
