Zionist and Palestinian uses of religion differ fundamentally in function and centrality

Evidence

Behind this rather superficial similarity between the Zionist and Palestinian uses of religion lies a complex and differing picture that will be examined in the following discussion. Throughout more than a century of the Palestinian struggle with Zionism, the use of religion and religious claims by the Palestinian national movement has differed profoundly from that practiced by Zionism on two levels: function and centrality. Function denotes the purpose for which religion and religious claims were deployed by both the Zionists and the Palestinians; centrality refers to how central the place of religion and religious claims has been within these two national movements throughout the struggle. — Nadim N.
