Religious claims anchor constitutional inequality and block democratic equality.

Evidence

The religious claim is not only at the core of settler colonialism in Palestine, it is also at the heart of constitutional inequality in Israel. Only if Israel is designated as a Jewish state given by God (in whose existence we do not have to necessarily believe) exclusively to the Jewish people – the core claim of Zionism – can the calls for equality between Arab and Jew or transforming Israel into a state for all its citizens be labeled as “fanatic.” Keep God and his promises out of it, and seek the kind of secularization mandated by decolonization as described above, and then equality and the civic state become the fundamentals of democratization. — Nadim N.
