Racialized unruly populations become targets of states of exception
Evidence
In the extreme, âuncooperative,â ârogue,â or unruly populations (states, communities, groups, individuals) are to be subjected to necropolitical discipline through the threat of imprisonment or death, physical or social. These forces of unruliness â those taken to be unbounded by the force of law â are likewise deïŹned through racial extension and rearticulation. Exceptions to normativizing practice, they become the targeted subjects of states of exception. A state of exception licenses the state reserving to itself extraordinary power in the name of securitization to treat such subjects in any way deemed necessary to restrict, restrain, or disappear them. â David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race, 1750
Categorization
- DEFINE: Introduces âstate of exceptionâ and ânecropolitical disciplineâ as the mechanism by which securitization justifies disappearing targeted subjects.
- XREF: Resonates directly with the sacrifice/dying theme in the âOn Sacrificeâ article and with Agambenâs state of exception. â connects to: State violence against racialized populations recurs across centuries and continents â David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race: Reflections onâŠ, 22; Unruly populations defined through racial extension face necropolitical discipline â David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race: Reflections onâŠ, 1750; Manufactured scarcity and disposability govern racialized populations by timing need â David Theo Goldberg, The Threat of Race: Reflections onâŠ, 1879 (+3 more)
- DEEPTHINKING: The claim that legal exclusion is itself produced through racial rearticulation, and that securitization licenses the state to âdisappearâ people, reframes the legality/illegality boundary as a racializing technology - worth sitting with.
