Parents socialize Multiracial children toward one of several identities they never personally experienced
Evidence
Parents of Multiracial children have multiple identities that they can foster in their children, including the biological mother’s ERI, biological father’s ERI, and a child with a Multiracial identity (Atkin and Yoo, 2019). Because of these differing ethnic-racial backgrounds and experiences, parents may have different attitudes, approaches, and practices to socializing their Multiracial child(ren) (Gonzales-Backen, 2013; Csizmadia et al., 2014). Additionally, parents and caregivers are in a unique position in that they are socializing Multiracial children without themselves having experienced their children’s Multiracial reality (Rockquemore and Laszloffy, 2005; Rollins and Hunter, 2013). Furthermore, when one parent is white, they do not understand the experience of being a person of color and may experience difficulty helping their children make sense of racialized experiences (Rauktis et al., 2016). — Tatiana I.
