Only their joint combination distinguishes social movements from other politics

Evidence

Taken singly, each of these elements exists separately and in combination with other forms of contention. Military parades, religious processions, and fraternal order celebrations, for instance, often present their own versions of WUNC displays. Sustained campaigns frequently enliven contested elections, and social-movement performances such as public meetings also take place outside of movements. The combination of sustained campaigns, public performances, and WUNC displays, however, sets off the social movement from other forms of contentious politics. Participants in the Evian protests of June 2003 were clearly carrying on social-movement activity rather than performing a coup d’état, pursuing an election campaign, striking against employers, making a revolution, or exercising interest-group politics. β€” Charles Tilly, Regimes and Repertoires, 1164
