Monolithic framing lets Islamophobes claim predictive knowledge of all Muslims

Evidence

Minoo Moallem argues that “the idea that a cultural or religious system can be intrinsic has its roots in European race relations and, in particular, in the discourse of anti-Semitism.” The religious othering of Jews and Muslims has often been intertwined (see Chapter 1). The process of creating a monolithic and unchanging religion or culture labeled “Islam” allows its proponents to “know” with certainty what happens in Muslim-majority countries, as seen in the CNN interview, or to predict how Muslims might behave as seen in various counterradicalization programs. A monolithic “Islam” serves as a default to stabilize the ideology of anti-Muslim racism even while it allows for “good” and “bad” Muslims. — Deepa Kumar, Islamophobia and the Politics of Empire, 274
