Meaningful race-critical dialogue is an acquired skill requiring guided practice
Evidence
In alignment with Freire’s problem-posing model, we implement practices that assist students in their personal growth as free and questioning agents within and beyond the classroom through dialogue and creative inquiry. As Freire (1970) states, “Problem-posing education bases itself on creativity and stimulates true reflection and action upon reality, thereby responding to the vocation of persons as beings who are authentic only when engaged in inquiry and creative transformation” (p. 84). Furthermore, our experience in this course confirms DiAngelo’s (2011) assessment that race-critical dialogue requires practice. That is, DiAngelo’s understanding of “White Fragility” reframes the question of critical dialogue on racism as one of habitus, which requires the instructor to guide the students to unveil and nurture the necessary predispositions and skills for meaningful dialogue and personal transformation. — James D. Kirylo (ed.), Reinventing Pedagogy of the Oppressed, 497
