Legal white classification excluded Middle Eastern students from diversity resources

Evidence

Beginning in 2013 and for the first time in its 150-year history, the nation’s preeminent and seventh-largest public university system, the University of California (UC), has formal y recognized Iranians and other SWANA populations as students of color.
Previously, Iranian and other Middle Eastern–heritaged students were funneled into any number of subcategories (“Middle Eastern,” “North African,” “other”) that were later subsumed into a “white/Caucasian” racial group. Thus, institutionaland system-level statistics regarding Middle Eastern enrollment, achievement, and treatment at UC were never disaggregated from those of white European Americans. Consequently, due to their white racial categorization, Middle Eastern–heritage students had been unable to access educational resources, faculty and administrative hiring lines, student recruitment and retention support, and other programmatic funding reserved for diversity and equity purposes. — Neda Maghbouleh, The Limits of Whiteness, 342
