Iranian family racial talk repeatedly centers the Aryan myth and Persian exceptionalism

Evidence

As a result, intergenerational conversations about racial identities within Iranian American families reveal three recurring conflicts: (1) the veracity of an insoluble, historical synonymy between Aryans and Iranians; (2) what traits might be considered unique to Iranians in the ethno-racial landscape of the broader Middle East; and (3) a deeply held belief in “Persian exceptionalism,” as manifested through the figure of the incredible, exceptional Persian. These conflicts, common and seemingly banal to the youth who shared their stories, are provocative evidence of the internal making and unmaking of a specifically Iranian American shade of whiteness. — Neda Maghbouleh, The Limits of Whiteness, 174
