Hegemony as a concept traces to Lenin’s anti-economist revolutionary theory, not his vocabulary.
Evidence
See pp. 333, 357 and 365 above. The “fact of hegemony” referred to is of course the Soviet Revolution. The attribution of the ‘xoncept of hegemony” to Lenin is more difficult to interpret, since the word hegemony as such does not figure prominently in Lenin’s work. It seems most likely that what Gramsci has in mind are aspects of Lenin’s general theory of proletarian revolution as they evolved in the struggle against economism and as they are expressed for example in Two Tactics of Social Democracy (1905). — Antonio Gramsci, Selections from the Prison Notebooks, 2591
Categorization
- DEFINE: Gramsci’s editors pinpoint the Leninist source of ‘hegemony’ as the anti-economism struggle and Two Tactics, not any explicit Leninist usage of the word.
- XREF: Anchors the term that later grounds Islamophobia scholarship on consent, common sense and cultural rule rather than sheer coercion.
