Grammar’s copula structure prefigures and directs how philosophy must unfold

Evidence

In so far as syntax inaugurates order and creates relations between its elements, it shows philosophy how to proceed. The relation subject– copula–predicate is a sequence, an order of events, a way things are to happen, and to the speaking subject who makes use of it, it gives a direction. The order in which the elements of the proposition occur, both in the logical and chronological sense, indicates what is the precedent and what the consequence. If philosophy has a horizon already constituted by grammar, its task will be to raise this order of preceding cause and succeeding consequence to its higher form of truth, in other words, to its ‘necessity’. Philosophy must show that the difference carved out by the copula between subject and predicate does not represent a simple and random juxtaposition of terms (where the relation is something external and indifferent to the terms), but derives from a partition intrinsic to the subject itself. The coming of the event takes place in the proposition, revealed as the scene of the advent (lieu d’avènement). This is something we could recall from the Greek verb συµα νειν (from which comes συµεηκς, accident, contingency, predicate), meaning at once to follow logically and to happen, to come to pass. Hence the proposition, in which the subject develops its own self-differentiation, is the very place that promises the future. — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel, 1165

Categorization

  • DEFINE: Defines the predicate relation as an ‘accident’ carrying both logical-following and temporal-happening, grounding plasticity’s temporal logic in the proposition itself.
  • XREF: The claim that syntax shows philosophy its order tightly parallels the reading purpose of tracing how dialectical process gets its shape from preliminary linguistic form — connects to her brain-work project’s assumption that conceptual structure prefigures material. — connects to: Ordinary grammar’s linear subject-copula-predicate structure blocks genuine speculative thought — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel: Plasticity,…, 1172; Grammar is the alphabet of the spiritual realm and the content of logic — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel: Plasticity,…, 1145; Syntactic subject-copula-predicate order pre-structures how events are conceived as preceding cause and consequence — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel: Plasticity,…, 1165 (+2 more)
  • DEEPTHINKING: The identification of the grammatical copula with the site where the future ‘advenes’ is a dense, paradigm-carrying thesis that would reward long sitting.
