A scale with good internal consistency was eventually developed to measure this. It produced a very surprising positive correlation with right-wing authoritarianism that, when we took it apart, seemingly uncovered a little gold mine of insights. But although we looked in several populations, we never sighted an “authoritarian on the left.” We did find some “Wild-Card Authoritarians” that may have led to rumors of the “monster” in the first place. — Bob Altemeyer, The Authoritarian Specter, 3044
