Every major social movement began by demanding collective attention

Evidence

Again and again, the first step of any social or political transformation has been a group of people insisting that the thing they care about demands collective attention. Abolition! Suffrage! The environment! Nuclear disarmament! The harms of Big Tobacco! This is what Attention Activists across the country and the world are doing right now. They are saying, as we have said in these pages: Hey! Notice that thing you call your attention? Something’s not quite right, eh? Well, you’re not alone—just about EVERYONE feels this way. And it’s no mystery why that’s the case: because the same system that is fracking your attention is fracking mine, too. We’re both affected by this problem. Which means that we can work together to solve it. — The Friends of Attention, Attensity!, 449
