Even Muslim civil rights organizations are surveilled and discredited by the state

Evidence

“Acting Muslim” today in the United States invites suspicion from the state and maximizes the prospect of backlash from hatemongers. For Muslim Americans who confirm their religious identity by wearing headscarves or Islamic dress, fasting on Ramadan and regularly attending the mosque, merely practicing their First Amendment rights is perilous. Muslim Americans like Nora, driven by fear to conform, cover, or conceal their Muslim identity, may diminish the prospect of suspicion from the state or backlash from bigots, but in doing so they are complicit in supporting the very mission Islamophobia aims to advance—eroding and eliminating every manifestation of Islam, until it is gone from America altogether. — Khaled A. This act of denying Muslims their American identity is a racializing act and is accomplished through hypersurveillance. The belief that to be American is to be white is resurfacing as Muslims are made to feel they are incapable of being loyal to America because their bodies are equated with terror and their values are somehow antithetical to Western or American ones. In many ways, it feels as if America is revisiting its past: the early twentieth century, when South Asian men desperately fought for naturalization were denied it because their religious identity situated them as incapable of sharing Western values. The act of racialized surveillance is also an act that strips one of citizenship. — , Selod, Saher - Forever Suspect_…, 658 (#expands, via linked claim)
