Dogmatism correlates with rightist authoritarianism even when group comparisons fail.
Evidence
If you consider the Stereopathy-Acquiescence items as a measure of “right- ist” authoritarianism, and overlook the difficulty in finding a significant difference with only 9 “authoritarians” from an original sample of 301, this study indicates that rightist authoritarianism is unconnected with dogmatism. But Hanson also found that, over the whole sample, dogmatism correlated higher with authoritarianism items than with nonauthoritarianism items. He observed, “It would appear then that, to some extent at least, there is an inherent relationship between authoritarianism of the right and dogmatism” (p. — Bob Altemeyer, The Authoritarian Specter, 2589
Nevertheless, in the four item development studies mentioned above, scores on the mock DOG scales correlated .50, .48, .52, and . with RWA scores. — Bob Altemeyer, The Authoritarian Specter, 2688
I hope you agree with me, as you examine the DOG items, that they do not refer to any particular field of thought or opinion. The statements apply to whatever someone takes to be the “important things” in life, the “central issues,” and so on. Because of this focus on the “biggies,” I do not propose that DOG scores will measure “rigidity” in smaller issues (such as the dispute over “You say ‘Tomato,’ and I say ‘Tomato’ ”’). But the DOG Scale was not hard-wired to make religious people, ardent socialists, environmentalists, or any group in particular look particularly dogmatic. … Nevertheless, in the four item development studies mentioned above, scores on the mock DOG scales correlated .50, .48, .52, and . with RWA scores. — Bob Altemeyer, The Authoritarian Specter, 2688
The four scales interlocked about as expected (Table 8.2). In particular, DOG scores correlated over . with RWA, nearly . with Fundamentalism, and about . with Zealot scores. So we have here a replication among parents of the previous student-based finding that right-wing authoritarians tend to be dogmatic. — Bob Altemeyer, The Authoritarian Specter, 2763
