Distrust of atheists by believers is one-directional and deeply asymmetrical
Evidence
In all of our studies, we found repeatedly a strong trend such that believers distrusted atheists. What about the opposite? Do atheists distrust believers? Distrust of believers was something that we of course looked for in our data, but found none. What we, and others, found instead among nonbelievers was attitudes ranging from total indifference to mild trust toward believers. … In contrast, we find consistent and strong distrust of atheists even among moderate believers even in largely secular subcultures in Canada. — Norenzayan, Ara, Big gods - how religion transformed…, 284
Categorization
- XREF: The believers-distrust-atheists-but-not-reverse asymmetry maps to why a state must force apostasy displays: trust flows one way, and the authorities police only that vulnerable direction.
- DEFINE: Establishes the empirical asymmetry essential to understanding anti-atheist prejudice as distinct from generic ingroup-outgroup conflict.
