Commercial loudspeaker engineering requires translation across varied sources and listeners

When I joined Harman International in 1991 as Corporate Vice President of Acoustical Engineering, it was after 27 years as a research scientist in the National Research Council of Canada. There are huge differences between those jobs. In one situation I was free to investigate, learn and report results of experiments. I was the judge. In the other, I would be judged on the basis of how Harman’s products were perceived in the marketplace, and we had many products in many marketplaces. Our products had to “translate” programs from many sources to listeners of many kinds.
