Loudspeakers and headphones dominate perceived reproduced sound quality
Evidence
Loudspeakers and headphones are the prime determinants of perceived sound quality in reproduced sound. Their timbral neutrality is important because they represent—speak for—all musical instruments and vocalists, all pop and jazz groups, and symphony orchestras. Stereo and especially multichannel audio add important perceptions of envelopment, of being in large spaces, and immersion, of being surrounded by sounds from many directions. 548. These physical, technical systems reproduce sound, and that sound is art produced by musicians and crafted by recording engineers using these same systems. The art needs to translate from the creators to the customers. The circle of confusion should not exist. When good music recordings, movies and video concerts combine with good sound reproduction systems the experiences are truly remarkable entertainment. — Toole, Floyd E, Sound reproduction- the acoustics and…, 1961
