Adorno derived F-scale items by translating Horkheimer’s anti-Semitism theory into questions

Evidence

In the middle of December he received the bundle of papers with the title F-scale' from Adorno, with documents from Berkeley on the new questionnaire. This was all initial material for the questionnaire. The questions suggested were partly still to be reformulated and put in a form which was comprehensible and psychologically suitable for those being questioned. Adorno himself had worked out eighty to a hundred questions, a number of which he had distilled out of the “Elements of Anti-Semitism” by a kind of translation process’. The extensive, unfinished material on the questionnaire discouraged Horkheimer. He was afraid, he wrote to Adorno, that the questionnaire, which we wanted to keep short and quite simple, is becoming far too complex and sophisticated again to be able to be used in any sort of group. Developments here in the Committee largely depend on us being able to use a single questionnaire to carry out samples in socially significant groups in various cities. — Rolf Wiggershaus, The Frankfurt School, 396
