Wideband frequency modulation produces far more roughness than amplitude modulation

Evidence

Frequency modulation can produce much larger roughness than amplitude modulation. A strong frequency modulation over almost the whole frequency range of hearing produces a roughness close to 6 asper. Only amplitude modulation of broad-band noises is able to produce such a large roughness. — Professor Dr.-Ing. Hugo Fastl, Professor Dr.-Ing. Eberhard, Psychoacoustics- Facts and Models, 1454
