Whiteness is a privilege gained by excluding blacks from one’s occupations
Evidence
In his provocatively titled book How the Irish Became White, Ignatiev shows the process by which the Irish were able to move from being seen as comparable to blacks to being seen as different: “To enter the white race was a strategy to secure an advantage in a competitive society” (Ignatiev, 1995, p. 2). The Irish, Ignatiev shows, took advantage of the existing color line in the U.S. to cooperate in pushing free blacks out of jobs such as construction and delivery. “To be acknowledged as white, it was not enough for the Irish to have a competitive advantage in the labor market; in order for them to avoid the taint of blackness it was necessary that no Negro be allowed to work in occupations where Irish were to be found” (Ignatiev, 1995, p. 112). Once again, we see that race and racial differences are an illusion, constructed out of the struggles of people within a hierarchical system that allows only a few to be on top. — Rebecca A. - XREF: Sharpens the ch25 claim that race is an invented discursive category: here the boundary itself is shown to be a labor-market strategy, which will help the classroom translation of race-as-invention. — connects to: Whiteness was defined as exclusion from black occupation, not skin or work — Noel Ignatiev, How the Irish Became White, 399; Whiteness functions as structural privilege rather than mere social identity.; Proximity to Whiteness and distance from Blackness determine immigrant privilege (+10 more)
- DEFINE: Concretizes what it means for a group to ‘become white’ — not ancestry but active exclusion of blacks, giving students a testable mechanism rather than an abstraction.
- SHARE: Send to the colleague teaching labor history — the Ignatiev quote about needing no Negroe in any occupation where Irish were found collapses the distinction between racism and economic strategy.
