White supremacy in Australia and New Zealand drives political Islamophobia in both settler states

Evidence

Chapter 6 focuses on a sphere of global Islamophobia that until the terror attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand, on March 15, 2019, was underexamined. On that fateful Friday, fifty-one Muslims were slain by a white supremacist terrorist who traveled to New Zealand from Australia. It uncovers the perilous connection between the development of white supremacy in these two settler colonial states and the recent uptick in political and popular Islamophobia in both. The chapter closes with a rebuke of the media penchant for only finding Muslims newsworthy when villains, not when victims. — Khaled A. Beydoun, The New Crusades_ Islamophobia and the…, 77

  • XREF: The claim that media only finds Muslims newsworthy as villains connects to my book’s reading purpose on global Islamophobia, and echoes the commodification-of-muslimness thread seen earlier in the book.
