Valencian Moriscos used Roman-derived currency symbols inherited from ancient Rome

Evidence

These are in fact the symbols that occur in Valencian sources, Christian and Muslim alike, and were still in regular use in the sixteenth century. I preserve them here because they convey very directly the cultural and economic continuity of the Mediterranean world to which Luis al-Gazi, and the Valencian Moriscos in general, fully belonged. We must remember they were heirs to the ancient civilization of the Romans—with its librae, solidi and denarii—as well as being heirs to the civilization of Islam. — L. P.
