Valencian Moriscos supplied two-thirds of public funds as one-third of the population
Evidence
The Valencian Inquisition had been asked to set out those disadvantages and those advantages that might ensue if the Moriscos (and this is the term in fairly regular use by now, moriscos) were expelled from Spain, and in particular from the Kingdom of Valencia. Among the disadvantages the Inquisitor listed were the loss of one-third of the population of the kingdom and the loss of two-thirds of the income accruing to public funds (“because they”—presumably the Moriscos—“are the ones who pay most” [por ser aquellos los que mas pagan], Reinoso adds, revealingly). — L. P. Harvey, Muslims in Spain, 1500 to 1614, 1376
