Use-value’s definition is circular within value-producing society.
Evidence
The Marxian definition of use-value – as the ‘usefulness of a thing’ – is only accurate in a value-producing society whose precondition and result are usevalues themselves. Joan Robinson notes the mediacy between use-value and exchange-value when she claims that ‘[u]tility is a metaphysical concept of impregnable circularity; utility is the quality in commodities that makes individuals want to buy them, and the fact that individuals want to buy commodities shows that they have utility’. — Dirk Braunstein, Adorno’s Critique of Political Economy, 1277
