The Ukrainian Orange Revolution failed to change the oligarchical economic structure
Evidence
It worked. The supreme court invalidated the results and called for a new vote, which Yushchenko won, 52 percent to 44 percent. For many people around the world, this was an inspiring instantiation of “people power” (a designation born out of the 1986 uprising that removed US-backed anticommunist dictator Ferdinand Marcos from power in the Philippines), and it became the most famous of the “color revolutions” that took place in the former Soviet space beginning in Georgia. Like most of those, however, the Orange Revolution did nothing to change the oligarchical structure of the Ukrainian economy. Once in power, Yushchenko and Tymoshenko began to bicker over her business ties, and conditions remained atrocious for regular people. — Vincent Bevins, If We Burn, 476
Categorization
- SEED: The ‘people power’ label origin in the 1986 Philippines uprising and how successful street revolutions leave economic structures untouched is worth an essay comparing color revolutions to other protest movements.
- QUESTION: Bevins flags the orange revolutions as keeping oligarchs in place - a thread this book probably develops into a pattern claim worth tracing across all the book’s case studies.
