The movement’s central truth is human infinitude, irreducible to proof or numbers.

Evidence

This is the highest truth we stand for. And it is true. But it is “true” in a way that is distinct from the “truth” of, say, the correlation of secondhand smoke exposure with respiratory infections in children. Our truth cannot really be “proved” by any existing scientific methods. It cannot be “pinned down,” exactly. It is too big for that! In fact, it is precisely the nature of this truth—that our humanity cannot be reduced to numbers, or even to language—that makes it impossible to put forward in a way that will “compel assent”! This truth is infinite, because it is the truth of our infinitude. … This has implications for how we move through a day, and how we move as a movement. We must organize around a truth—authentic human freedom—that we actively seek to understand. We use the full range of our attention at the same time that we are learning precisely what that range is, and what we can do with what we learn. — The Friends of Attention, Attensity!, 176

  • DEEPTHINKING: The passage confronts the movement’s own epistemic paradox: organizing around a truth it cannot prove, and defiantly rejecting compelled assent as the criterion of truth.
  • QUESTION: This is the bet’s weak point—if the truth can’t compel assent, what can it compel? How does a justice claim succeed absent proof? Worth pressing.
