The Han Imperial Academy was the world’s first state-funded university
Evidence
One. The Imperial Academy (Tai Xue), founded in 124 BCE under Emperor Wu of Han. The Tai Xue was, at its peak, a substantial institution housing perhaps thirty thousand students at the Eastern Han capital of Luoyang. It taught, primarily, the Five Classics under the Han Confucian curriculum. Students were drawn from across the empire — primarily, though not exclusively, from elite families. Graduates were placed into bureaucratic positions throughout the imperial administration. The Tai Xue is, structurally, the world’s first state-funded university — substantially earlier than the comparable institutional developments in other ancient civilizations and approximately a thousand years before the medieval European universities. — , The Rod and the Child, 1934
