The diseased soul fails either to self-differentiate or to persist as identity

Evidence

The aggravation has three degrees: the ‘magical relationship’, ‘magnetic somnambulism and its cognate states’, and ‘clairvoyance, or the prophetic’. These three moments reveal a ‘Self’ still unable to sustain itself as an individual; substance and subject appear to it as two diverse entities, and this sort of co-existence brings about two types of diseased conditions. On the one hand are the diseases of ‘tautology’, or forms of ‘idiocy’ caused by the fact that the soul here has no relation with anything but itself and cannot succeed in producing its own self-differentiation. On the other hand are the diseases of ‘heterology’, or forms of ‘alienation’ in the literal sense, resulting from the soul’s inability to forge a relationship to itself as persisting as an identity. — Catherine Malabou, The Future of Hegel, 365

  • DEFINE: Defines the two pathological poles of the feeling soul: tautology (no self-differentiation) and heterology (no persisting identity) — the exact conceptual machinery grounding plasticity.
  • XREF: Connects to the reader’s brain work: the failure to differentiate and the failure to persist mirror plasticity’s twin capacity to give form and to annihilate form. — connects to: Narcissism attempts the impossible in-itself for-itself synthesis that defines divinity — Simone de Beauvoir, The Second Sex, 1793; The narcissist’s self-relation is doomed because no double exists — Simone de Beauvoir, The Second Sex, 1834; Without destruction of prior form, identity cannot sustain itself. — Catherine Malabou, What Should We Do with Our Brain?, 245 (+2 more)
  • QUESTION: Is this early Hegelian pathology taxonomy a ghost precursor to neuro-psychiatric notions like dissociation and ego-dystonia? Worth tracing.
