The 2011 Oxford volume predates India and Myanmar’s violent Islamophobic movements
Evidence
A series of texts examining Islamophobia beyond the United States and the American experience are organized as edited volumes. These, which feature academics and commentators, examine Islamophobia as national case studies. Often, these are case studies that examine Islamophobia within the narrow contours of national cultures, legal systems, and histories. A notable text, published in 2011 by Oxford University Press, is Islamophobia: The Challenge of Pluralism in the 21st Century, edited by John L. Esposito and Ibrahim Kalin. Islamophobia is a pointedly academic text, intended for scholars across academic disciplines, and offers both comparative analysis (“Islamophobia in the West: A Comparison between Europe and the United States,” p. 21) and individual case studies. The case studies focus largely on Europe and the United States, which is understandable given that it was published before the modern emergence of violent Islamophobic movements in India and Myanmar, for example. — Khaled A.
